It could be very interesting to see who will replace McConnell as Senate Pro Tem... because there is a slight possibility that it could be Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler! It will probably come down to Peeler or Hugh Leatherman of Florence - who is the head of the Senate Finance Committee. And from what I hear, they both want it. The Senate will be voting on this Tuesday, so I suspect this will be a busy weekend indeed for Mr Peeler. Leatherman presently is more powerful than Peeler (his chairmanship of the Finance Committee - Peeler is vice-chairman - entitles him to a seat on the all-powerful Budget and Control Board). However, he will be 81 years old next month. Leatherman is also known as the "Godfather of Pork." lol... And think about this... what if McConnell then resigns as Lt Gov to run for his old Senate seat, and Peeler had to take that position (which his brother Bob used to have!)... Wouldn't that be some weird political intrigue!

I guess I'll have to look up the track records on these guys. I'll just be interested in finding out how many of them are the real good 'ole boys. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.
We desperately need reform in this state. We need to have a house-cleaning in Columbia.

Harvey Peeler didn't get the spot... The Democrats (and former Democrats) lined up together and elected Richland Co.'s John Courson (a former Democrat)... My thinking is that McConnell is going to step down from Lt Gov before long, and Courson will thus be elevated.

I don't know him, but he seems like a great guy, but like I say, that don't mean he is the right one. Do you know Courson, Mr. frost?

I tell you what I don't like.......the fact that John Hawkins is running for his old Senate Seat. That is the worst thing that has ever come to Spartanburg county......John Hawkins. He is a menace to our county. I hope the citizens of District 12 will be wise and realize the trouble he brought about for Spartanburg Magistrate Court when he was Senator. Instead of just being a senator for the District he was elected for, he took over Spartanburg County and became a dictator, giving the County the nickname of "Peyton Place."
If people don't want to re-elect Bright, I hope they will find someone good to take his place instead of letting Hawkins slide right on in like a slithering snake and become the same old shady character that he was before. He hurt so many people, including his own family.
All he did in Columbia was push bills of his own that would profit him, for his own self interest. HE is one shady character with crooked ethics that we can not stand another one of his Regimes.
I don't know how Peeler is now, but I do know that H. Peeler worked with John Hawkins and went along with just about everything he wanted. But I think Hawkins threatened a lot of the other Senators into doing what he wanted as far as the bills are concerned. According to what some of the Senators said at one time. And that's how he did most everything he accomplished, by threats against people. I know that for a fact.
I wouldn't vote for Hawkins for Garbage collecter.

Pinky, I agree with you about Hawkins. Just remember, he got stopped one time and I know how he got stopped. He'll get stopped again unless he's gotten even shadier than he was the last go 'round. Not to worry though, the same folks are around that got him stopped the last time.

"I don't know him, but he seems like a great guy, but like I say, that don't mean he is the right one. Do you know Courson, Mr. frost?" No I don't know him personally. I know of him, and I watch the Legislature on ETV, so I've seen him work on there. The only real issue I have against him, is that he does not tend to be a real fiscal conservative. But, then again, McConnell, as much as I like him, was also at times a big spender. We'll just have to wait and see where this goes. "I tell you what I don't like.......the fact that John Hawkins is running for his old Senate Seat." I heard about that, and I agree with you. "If people don't want to re-elect Bright..." Bright is a great man and Senator. Not in my district, but I wholeheartedly support his re-election. I only wish there were more folks like him (and Tom Davis from Beaufort) in Columbia. "I don't know how Peeler is now..." Well, I'm not going to talk bad about Peeler, lol... Never know when I might have to call on my Senator. I think, overall, he has done a pretty good job over the decades. He could push for more fiscal responsibility, but then again, maybe he does the best he can considering all those big spenders he has to deal with. I've contacted him before over issues, and he has always responded personally and courteously.

The rape allegations against John Hawkins from the 80's have been brought into that race...

Jack - are you saying Bright is bringing it up? I hope not - I am not wild about Bright but have every intention of voting for him - but bringing this up will make me possibly not vote.
Still won't vote for Hawkins. I might in the general election if he is the candidate but would be very unhappy about it.

Ele, I don't think it is Bright bringing it up. Fits news is all over it and here is a link that you can read if you want to.... After reading this, I really don't see how anyone can't see that Hawkins case should go to the State Grand Jury for investigation. www.fitsnews.com/2012/05/01/the-john-hawkins-rape-case-files/When you get to the bottom of the page, after the FITS LEAK topic, click on the " JOHN HAWKINS RAPE CASE DOCUMENTS" You can read the victims statement and everything about how the rape was alleged to have happened....and all the other documents and statements concerning the rape. It is really an eye opener and anyone who really reads that, should open their eyes to the fact that John Hawkins is a dangerous character. This is not the only case or victim where Hawkins' actions have been questioned.....allegedly. My understanding is that there have been Pages who have come forward but no one knows what has happened to those situations, so since there's no proof of those so far, that would be considered hearsay. Money goes a long way in some cases. But one case is too many! I will vote for Lee Bright, again, in the primary to keep John Hawkins' name from appearing on the ballot in Nov. hopefully. Someway, somehow, we have to collectively put a stop to this kind of person. I heard he had Beltram helping him....don't know for a fact....and that alone is enough to turn my stomach against Hawkins.
