Still seeing rabbits and squirrels. Crows are an everyday thing also.

Hey R.R. here's a good one for you ... We had a house on the inlet down at Garden City last week complete with a dock. There were your usual salt water critters there, crabs, fishes, cranes, egrets, pelicans and lots of other waterfoul. At low tide on Wednesday I saw an unusual trail in the muck and mud ... that led to a beaver ... yeaup ... you heard me right ... a beaver ... fat, furry, and the signature big flat tail. I thought it strange to see a beaver in a salt water marsh and it looked as if it were confused and disoriented. As the tide began to come back in, the beaver crawled over into the sawgrass and disappeared from view ... that is untill the next low tide the following morning. Poor old beaver had died and the carcass was lying at the edge of the sawgrass. That's when I saw the next strange critter ... a four foot long alligator! No chit man ... a genuine hand bag on legs! Do alligators frequent salt water marshes? The gator hung around the area and was still out there when we left early Saturday morning ... along with the now bloated beaver. I reckon the ole gator was waiting for the beaver to get all "randy" before chowin down on it! It is my understanding that gators preferr rancid meat (kyarn) to fresh meat ... so it stands to reason that he was biding his time untill poor old beaver was "just ripe" for "pickin".
The fishing wasn't real good, the danged ole pin fish were still up in the inlet and were hitting the shrimp as soon as the hook hit the water. I did catch a couple of 1 to 2 pounders though. I caught one red snapper on finger mullett and had zero luck on the flounder. The blue crabs were plentiful and we caught a 20gallon cooler full in less than two days. The minimum is five inches but we only kept the seven inch and larger ones. All in all we had a great week and I can't wait till next year!

Glad you all had a good time, aminal. Did you get any pictures of the alligator?
We always stay in a house along a canal (lined with houses on both sides) with a boat ramp and dock right off the back steps. We always see little critters along there also, but haven't seen an alligator. Has been several years since we have gone, though, and it is about time to go again.

Gators do get in salt water but they usually don't stay. I know a few guys for charlestonfishing.com have said they see a gator on the beach Sullinvan's Island from time to time. Yes gators drown their prey and pin it underwater to rot some so they can rip it away in pieces to eat. Not sure why the beaver was in the salt marsh but they can handle brackish water somewhat.

Did I tell y'all I ran over an alligator once on the interstate? It was "at work" (I was driving for work) in Florida - around Ocala if I remember correctly.

Ocala has loads of gators. My great-aunt Bonnie lived in Ocala. Her grandson is Mike Duvall that drives the Flintstone Flyer dirt tract car.

I see turkeys up here in Campobello all the time. Saw my first black bear back in the fall of the year. It was running around in our church yard at Glassy Mtn. Game warden came and rescued it. One dead coyote, so I was told by a neighbor, lying alongside of the road behind our houses.

Yesterday on our way home we were going down the road right off Hwy 29 in Converse. Just before the bridge over the train tracks their were five goundhog messing around. We stopped and watched them run off the hill back into their holes. They are cute little critters when they are running.
