A homeless man was found dead in Cherokee County, believed to be caused by hypothermia.

From what I keep hearing he didn't want to be in a shelter because they don't allow pets and he had two dogs. I hate it and I understand it.

Miracle Hill, which is (I think) the only homeless shelter in Cherokee County, has a lot of rules, which is of course their right. And Miracle Hill does help a whole lot of people across the Upstate. But a lot of homeless people won't go there for help because of some of these rules. Several years ago I volunteered at a homeless ministry in Shelby, and through that learned a lot about the high rate of untreated mental illness and such that contributes to some of their situations. I've even gone through hard times, where if I had not had a family to help out, I would have been homeless myself. And a tent in the woods sounds better than a shelter to me too. But hypothermia is sneaky, and you might not even realize how cold you are until it's too late.
The way some of these "ministries" operate is just not very Christian in my opinion (and I'm not talking about Miracle Hill here). One that especially irks me is... (a certain downtown ministry). I have heard from several people who were turned away there, simply because they could not provide proof of residence! Hunger does not depend on having a house! It is supposed to be a Christian ministry to provide food to the hungry, they're not a government agency giving out driver's licenses!!!

You are SO right Jack. I know of the "downtown ministry" you speak of. Another thing that irks me, is to see people go to Gaffney's Soup Kitchen to eat, and yet they are spending alot of money at Bingo every night. I have seen this "first hand".
