My parents were partial to the Rhode Island Reds and i seem to remember some of those gray hens and also some of the little chickens (bantams, i think). I like the ones that layed the big brown eggs. I never could stand an old white rooster. The only ones of those I ever saw were mean and would chase you as far as they could see you. While i'm at it here, on the subject of mean chickens, our mom would let us play in the backyard (fenced) and it would be getting along time for lunch when my dad would come home to eat and sometimes he would be running late. Well, my sisters and I would be yelling that we were hungry and mom would hand us a little piece of the cornbread that she usually had with lunch. Well, the chickens and their coop were also in the backyard and as soon as mom opened that backdoor here they would come and then the chase was on. I wonder if she thought that was funny? That mean rooster would get after me and scare me to death.

I too prefer old fashioned (true) Rhode Island Reds for egg production. For home-scale production, they are a good dual-purpose breed for meat as well. If someone wanted faster growth, the commercial Cornish Cross is the standard, but they grow into overweight crippled monsters if you don't process them on time. White Leghorns are the standard breed for commercial egg production. The old heritage breeds are better for home use.

True enough and weren't the RI red roosters pretty with their greens and dark colors in their tail feathers?

We have two RIR's but that are hardly my favorites.

A neighbor of mine way back when ??-ha, ha, I ain't telling how long ago, anyway she had chickens that she kept in two pens. One pen had a bunch of girls in there with a beautiful RIR rooster, the other pen had a gorgeous but deadly rooster in there. I don't know exactly what kind of rooster it was but it was black and the tail feathers had pathalos colors making it beautiful. My neighbor called it her black dominekkor (not sure of that spelling). Anyway, she would turn the chickens out of their pens in the afternoon and by dark they would return to their own pens to roost. There would usually be a good fight if either rooster got in the wrong territory (each others). I think the neighbor just liked to see a good ole chicken fight.

Another of my personal favorites is the Speckled Sussex. They are pretty birds, and they're dual purpose. I used to have several, but coyotes got them.
